The end result must appear effortless, but creativity requires a well-crafted plan, steely focus, and plenty of plain hard work coupled, somewhat illogically, with a complete lack of concern about outcome. This mixture fuels the engine of imagination; they provide its power.
Much of this section is for the curious, those who want to look under the hood, to cut into the mind of one writer—neither the best or worst of them. Not after the fact, when he toasting his work’s publication, but in mid-process, when he’s mopping his forehead while in the grip of some outrageous “What if…?” of the imagination.
The creative journey can be a rough ride on a rocky road; and participating in it, if only by observing, can get uncomfortable. Nevertheless, to create is to feel it, come what may; but to cease to create is the deadest end of all.
